What is life?

by Prabhuji

Do not try to confine life to a dictionary definition… Any attempt to define it will be futile, just as any effort to confine its meaning to a doctrine or a philosophy will be fruitless…

Life is not a static object to be defined… It is not a dogma to be confined within a doctrine… It is not a scientific concept to be explained with a theory, nor is it a belief to be included within certain religion…

These are only different ways to miss out on life… to continue to extend our illusory separation from it…

To surest way to disconnect ourselves from life is to start to think and theorize about it…

Life is to be lived, because life is a flow, a process, an uninterrupted stream… Life is not something static. It is not a thing, an object…

Only by living it, will you realize what it is…

Because Life is not an invention, nor our creation. We are waves of this flow, sparks of this fire of Life. We are waves of the ocean of existence… mamaivāṁśo jīva loke jīva bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ

Yoga is the consciousness of the union between the particles of existence and their origin. Live in such a way that your life leads to a reunion with Life… with Existence…

Separated from Life, you only know how to grow old… to wear out… like a chair, or a car… Growing old belongs to objects. It is not to really live…Life does not grow old; nor does it  die.

Live your life in such a way that it will not be “your life”, but it will be “Life living through you”… Let Life, in its totality, live through you…

In order to be united with Life, it is necessary that you stop living it according to your old patterns of behavior, according to your acquired ways, or according to the past…

If you continue living according to your acquired patterns, according to your conditioning, you will think that you are living, but actually, you will simply be reacting…

To react is to live from the past, from a memory…

Life is to live, Life is to be lived, but only in the now…

For you only live when you situate yourself in the now…

The meaning of the word yoga is union… Many explain it as the union of all the different aspects of the human being… I agree with that…

Others interpret it as the union of the soul with God… I agree with that…

However, for me, yoga is, above all, to become aware of our union with existence… to be conscious of our eternal union with life… to be conscious that we are the Whole, the Totality…

Our union with existence needs to develop strong roots. This means we must grow into the depths, seeking the very origin of life, of ourselves, of existence… Separation is to grow only upwards, but with inadequate roots…

This realization is yoga… and that is our eternal duty… sanātana-dharma… to realize and to be what you really are…

Life does not require a place to reach, but a direction. To live is to search, therefore it requires passion…

This is the reason why a real master does not give us goals. What he gives us instead is a passion… a passion to search…

Because life does not require goals or ideals,  but passion…

Because to live is not to understand or achieve something, it is not to reach any place. To live is a matter of feeling…

If you want to miss out on life completely, look around and try to find its meaning in theories and doctrines…

Life… existence… reality… are synonyms of Brahman… synonyms of God…

 Sri-bhagavan uvaca:

urdhva-mulam adhah-sakham

asvattham prahur avyayam

chandamsi yasya parnani

yas tam veda sa veda-vit

In the Bhagavad-gita (15.1) Krishna says to Arjuna:

“There is a Banyan tree whose roots grow upward and its branches down, and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas.”

To live is to grow… to develop yourself… to evolve…to die is just to grow older…

To live is to develop yourself… to develop yourself in the depths… when you truly live, your roots grow deeply into every moment… you seek the very source of life…

This is meditation…

To live and to grow is not to reject life, but to become every day less a body and more and more a being…

Bodily desires make you, more and more, simply a body… and the body dies…

To be is to be… a being… only then will you drink the nectar of immortality…

We are a tree with roots that grow upwards. To live is to grow and to develop roots that penetrate deeply into the heavens.

It is to know how to descend into the depths of ourselves, because to live is to burrow into the heights…
