Fray Marcos
Fray Marcos was born in Pardesivil, León, in 1938; his life was marked by adversity from the very beginning. The death of his mother, which occurred when he was barely a year old, ushered in a childhood marked by extreme hardship. Family ruin and hunger were a constant presence during his early years, until, at around the age of ten, he entered the service of a master. Far from being experienced solely as a burden, this circumstance represented for him a first step toward emancipation: for the first time, he could satisfy his hunger through his own efforts.
Later, the generous intervention of a benefactor from Madrid made it possible to fund his education and enabled him to enter the Dominican seminary. This admission marked a second liberation in his life’s journey. His novitiate and his studies in philosophy and theology passed without any particular distinction, as a rather unremarkable stage of formation. His first assignment was a school in Oviedo; however, teaching did not awaken in him a lasting vocation. As soon as he could, he moved to Madrid to study fine arts, a decision that constituted a third liberation.
In this new environment, he encountered a different intellectual and human horizon. Daily contact with restless young people, considerably younger than himself, decisively broadened his view of the world and fostered a profound transformation of his personal and cultural sensibilities. From that experience, he finally arrived at Parquelagos, where he has remained for thirty-eight years. It was there that, according to his own testimony, his true priestly life began.
The fourth and final liberation came in the wake of a serious traffic accident, an episode that introduced a radical rupture in his existence. The consequences were extreme: twenty days in a coma, seventy-two days in the intensive care unit, five months of hospitalization, and scars totaling 1.30 meters. Far from being reduced to a mere traumatic event, that experience operated as a decisive transformation of his life.
Friar Marcos became a guiding figure for Prabhuji, thanks to a steadfast relationship of dialogue, study, and companionship developed over several years between Prabhuji as a disciple and Friar Marcos as an authentic Master.
